Why have I been invited?

We are inviting all scholars/clinical fellows on the learning environment programme to take part in this study. We are keen to understand how what you learn on the programme is embedded into your leadership.

Do I have to take part?

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part, you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. This would not affect your legal rights or your status as scholar/clinical fellow. You may withdraw at your own request or withdrawal may be made at the request of the chief investigator. If you are withdrawn from the research for any reason, this will be explained to you by one of the team.

What will happen to me if I take part?

If you take part, you will be asked to give your consent and read this information first. You will then be invited to an individual interview, either via telephone or video conferencing. It is anticipated that you will be interviewed three times over the course of 18-months. With your consent, the researcher will record the interview – only your name and the date of the interview will be required. Your real name will be replaced by a code in order to maintain confidentiality.

We will also ask your permission to use any appraisals that you or anyone else completes throughout your time on the programme. Any information we do collect will be treated as confidential and replaced with the same code to protect your identity.

The research team will make a note of your name, gender, professional designation, and length of time you have held your professional registration/qualification. However, no other information about you will be required. All information will be anonymised and stored securely.

How do I consent to take part?

You can provide consent at the end of this information. If you agree to take part, a copy of your consent information will be automatically sent to you via the email you provide.

Expenses and payments

You will not be paid to participate in the study.

What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?

It is not anticipated that any harm will come to those who participate in this research. You will not be disadvantaged in any way if you take part in this research and this will not affect you in any way different to those who choose not to take part.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

We cannot promise the study will help you directly but the information we get from this study will help FNF to understand more about your experiences of their leadership development scholarship/fellowship programme and the impact the learning environment programme has on your development.

What happens when the research study stops?

During the study, your interview data will be analysed by a member of our research team. The results may be used in academic/professional publications in the future. Any extracts of the interviews used in these publications will be made anonymous in order to keep your identity confidential. We will not disclose any of your personal information to any third parties. Any exceptions to this, which might require the research team to breach of confidentiality, will only be made where a notifiable criminal offense has been conducted.

If you participate and would like to have the results of this research fed back to you, then you will need to provide the researcher with your consent to hold your contact details so that you can be contacted in the future.

What should I do if I experience distress?

This research involves you taking part in three separate 1-1 interview, with a member of our research team. The interviews will be spread out across the course of the programme. If you feel distressed during the interview, please tell us, and we will offer to pause or conclude the process. You can stop the interview at any time. If you continue to feel distressed (or feel you need mental health support for any reason) after leaving, you might wish to consult with your GP.

However, if at any point you need emotional support or information regarding mental health, the following national services are available. These services offer confidential support and information free of charge.

What if there is a problem?

If you have a concern about any aspect of this study, you should ask to speak to the researchers who will do their best to answer your questions. Contact details are given at the end of this information sheet. If you remain unhappy and wish to complain formally, the process for complaints is published on the Foundation’s website. If you do wish to make a complaint, please quote the study reference (ICTL) in any correspondence. A copy of FNF’s complaints policy is available on the website if you require any further information.

How will we use information about you?

We will need to use information from you for this study. This information will include:

• Initials, name, gender, your professional designation, and length of time you have held your professional registration/qualification.

People who do not need to know who you are will not be able to see your name or contact details. Your data will have a code number instead.

We will keep all information about you safe and secure. All information will be stored on a secure database ‘cloud storage’ and will only be accessed by the primary researcher and the chief investigator.

Once we have finished the study, we will keep some of the data so we can check the results. We will write our reports in a way that no-one can work out that you took part in the study.

What are your choices about how your information is used?

• You can stop being part of the study at any time, without giving a reason, but we will keep information about you that we already have.
• We need to manage your records in specific ways for the research to be reliable. This means that we won’t be able to let you see or change the data we hold about you.
