Leadership Through Covid: An Ethnic Minority Groups Perspective

Thinking of COVID-19 can often conjure up negative connotations, especially in relation to the impact on ethnic minority groups, patients, communities and staff. This ‘Leadership Through Covid’ publication is an opportunity to share a different and uplifting perspective.

The Florence Nightingale Foundation delivers the Aspiring Directors of Nursing (ADONs) programme as part of our scholarship. As part of our COVID-19 response in March 2020, we began our Ethnic Minority Leadership programme. A group of 22 ethnic minority nurses joined. Some of the stories of these exceptional leaders are presented in this publication and the below films. The aim is to inspire and challenge other ethnic minority group leaders to come forward and dare to dream the impossible.

At the end of this publication is summary of the calls to action from the leaders we feature. Play your part in this by reflecting on these, alone or with your teams and report your outcomes to the CNO and CMidO Ethnic Minority Groups Action Plan Future NHS Collaboration workspace. Together we can make the difference.

The Mary Seacole Trust: Caring for the Nation

The Mary Seacole Trust has launched a new platform to celebrate the contribution of ethnic minority nurses and midwives to the nation’s health and care. This comprises a collection of inspiring interviews of nursing and midwifery staff, who share their experiences of working in NHS and other care providers. We hear from participants who have joined NHS services from around the globe. Through their stories we find out what it feels like to be a minority ethnic nurse or midwife in the NHS, the changes that have taken place, and potential career opportunities and benefits a career in nursing and midwifery can offer.
