Celebrating nursing and midwifery leaders..

This year we celebrate the bicentenary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

  • To mark this occasion, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife. During this year we will recognise all that is great about nurses and midwives, all of whom represent our diverse communities and provide highly skilled care and compassion to patients and their families.
  • We will also look at the immense contribution that Florence Nightingale herself made to the profession as the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale is undoubtedly the world’s most famous nurse and her influence continues to inspire the world of nursing and medicine today. The aim of the Foundation since it was founded, has been to empower its scholars to become great nursing and midwifery leaders, honouring Florence’s legacy.
  • This is also our chance to celebrate our own scholars and alumni who go on to become great nursing and midwifery leaders themselves and positively impact their own places of work. It is important that nurses and midwives are empowered to use their collective professional voice effectively, and seek all opportunities to influence healthcare policy and practice. The Foundation continues to become ‘a go to place’ for professional opinion and debate, a recognised academy for healthcare thought, and aspires to be the voice for the nursing and midwifery for generations to come. The Foundation is Florence’s legacy today.

This is our year and our time to recognise and celebrate all that is great about our profession on an international level. It is nurses and midwives who use their expert skills in the workplace and their voice and experience to influence policy. This year we will shine a spotlight on all that is great about nursing and midwifery leaders as we honour Florence Nightingale’s legacy.
