In 2020 the Florence Nightingale White Rose Appeal was launched, with the support of our appeal ambassador, Helena Bonham-Carter, to show our support and gratitude to nurses and midwives.
Throughout our lives, we will all encounter a nurse or midwife, either caring for us or a loved one. At times we don’t remember the name of a nurse who looked after us, but we never forget the way they made us feel, and it is this memory and feeling that stays with us for a lifetime. You can thank a nurse or midwife who cared for you or a loved one by donating to the FNF White Rose Appeal in their honour.
Why a white rose?
Florence Nightingale famously wore Floris White Rose perfume and had bottles shipped out to her during her time in the Crimea war.
A white rose symbolises new beginnings. The feeling of hope has been missing since the pandemic began. However, it has been nurses and midwives working on the frontline of COVID-19 who have provided comfort and hope to patients and their families and is a fitting tribute to them.

“As an Alumna of the Florence Nightingale Foundation, as soon as I heard about the online support sessions in response to the COVID- 19
pandemic, I booked myself onto the service. I saw immediate results and it equipped me with the skills to ease my anxiety during intensely busy periods and gave me the confidence I need to provide support to my colleagues and my team.
The session itself allowed me to express my thoughts and provided a safe, confidential space to talk to my peers. We discussed issues we faced in light of the pandemic and ways to provide emotional wellbeing support to staff during difficult times. It gave me confidence in myself to know that what I am doing now, is the best thing I could be doing as a Sister, fighting on the frontline.”

My great, great grandmother, Joanna, was Florence’s aunt. My great, great uncle, Walter Bonham Carter helped to establish the Florence Nightingale Foundation in 1934. Joanna’s daughter, Hilary Bonham Carter, was arguably her best friend and assistant after the Crimea. I love the idea of continuing to assist the great woman over the centuries. Floris London - White Rose
The Floris London White Rose fragrance was a favourite perfume of Florence Nightingale, and in their Jermyn Street shop is displayed a treasured letter written by Florence herself in 1863 to “Mr Floris” thanking him for his “beautiful, sweet smelling nosegays”.
