Delirium Superimposed on Dementia: Closing the “Know-Do” Gap.
This report details the first year of a Professional Doctorate in Nursing encompassing a taught University module entitled “Developing the Research Concept” and my on going progression of a pragmatic mixed methodology research proposal through academic supervision cumulating in submission to both University ethics and NHS Trust research and development departments for final approval.
The paper explores my professional and personal development throughout the scholarship programme alongside the development of the research proposal: focusing on the need to close a gap between what is known in literature and done in practice pertaining to Registered Mental Health nurses’ care provision for patients with delirium superimposed on dementia. Highlighting the variance between delirium, dementia and delirium superimposed on dementia, an argument is made regarding the importance of understanding what influences nurses’ abilities to deliver evidence based care in practice, and also explores the lack of UK based research or clinical guidance.
As the research is on going, recommendations conclude that there is a need for continued momentum and dialogue around DsD and nursing requirements in clinical practice. Maintained conversations are essential to drive the research agenda forward, but also that of nursing education and development to promote an involved, educated and enthusiastic workforce able to effect positive change.
